We left Melbourne on a typical day: rainy, hot, humid, windy, followed by a "cool change" that halved the temperature. The long drive to Heywood via Geelong gave Toby a good workout in navigating the campervan. It drives just like a car until you need to do a U-turn. After a stop at Nirranda Cemetery to visit the graves of Sarah's great-grandparents, we had a live relative reunion with Sasha and Jaylan in Heywood. Very delicious meal at the Heywood pub too. We worked out the bedding arrangements, the importance of latching everything before driving off, and even tried out the toilet. Well, the boys did, Sarah is still working up to it.

Our first full day on the road dawned wet and rainy but thankfully no wind. Sarah got to drive the campervan into South Australia. Augie noted afterwards that he felt 'safer' when Toby drove. Augie was left behind at the giant lobster statue we passed along the way, never to be heard from again. Although we took the coast road so we could see the Murray River delta, the weather turned even worse and we didn't get to see much of anything at all. We arrived at our first stop, Port Elliot Big4 in pouring rain and howling wind. Sleeping in the van was a bit like being on a boat but without any rhythm to the rocking. The bits of the beach we could see look very beautiful but it's too windy and wet to see much at all. Today is just as bad but we are visiting friends and fortunately, the forecast is improving for Monday.
